What is a Facelift

Facelift – The face is the most visible and telling feature on a person’s body.  It conveys our age and expresses how we feel.  Over time, the skin on our face loses its firmness, the tissue begins to sag and wrinkles start to appear.  Sometimes these signs of aging in the midface, jaw line, and neck can make a person look tired or sad even if they’re full of energy. These changes in a person’s face can be the result of natural aging, genetic features, or environmental conditions and stress.

For some people, these changes depict a sign of wisdom and maturity, while others begin to lose confidence in their appearance.  If you’re bothered by these changes in your face, a facelift may be the solution to improving your self-confidence.  Facelifts are performed to correct remove excess fat, sagging facial skin and muscles, and restore firmness to your face in order to provide a rejuvenated, youthful appeal.

This page provides you with an overview of a plastic surgery procedure called the face lift.  It is a general introduction on the process.  To learn more about how the process can help you specifically, schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift or rhytidectomy, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the signs of aging in a person’s face and neck.  Features that can be corrected using this process include:  deep creases below the lower eyelid and between the nose and mouth, loss of muscle tone in the lower face due to displaced fat, loose skin and excess deposits.  Aside from making a person appear older or tired, these changes in a person’s face can even make an average sized person appear to have a ‘double chin’.  If done correctly, a facelift surgery should result in a more firm, youthful, energetic appearance.  It does not change the structure of your face so your basic appearance will remain in tact.  It just restores your face to its previously younger look.  Keep in mind that although this is a major process, it does not stop the affects of aging.  After the surgery, you will continue to age, but your aging will continue from a younger starting point.  Other surgical procedures that can be done alongside a face lift to revitalize a person’s appearance can include a brow lift or eyelid surgery.

Facelift – Who is this procedure for?

A facelift is designed for adults who physically and emotionally feel much younger than they appear.  Candidates most likely to achieve maximum results are:

  • Healthy and not have any medical conditions or life-threatening illnesses that may interfere with the healing process
  • Non-smokers
  • Positive about the process and have reasonable and definite goals for improving the appearance of their face
